This Sunday we had the first racing away from the usual Lansdowne course. We raced at the home of Southern Cross Cycling at the Waratah Circuit in Sutherland. We eventually had 35 riders competing – as many regulars will know the first time to Waratah can be a driving adventure. This week we welcomed Hugh racing with our group for the first time. Hugh blitzed the time trial, on the shorter circuit he was around the course almost before the time keepers realised. A special mention to Jaime O who did a fantastic time – not that she was happy with it when she was categorised with the A racers for the handicap race.
The D/E race was won by Ryker who kept looking over his shoulder to see where his competitors were, he lead in Joshua who is improving each week, and Gabby and Lauren. In C grade we had 11 starters, the honours went to Alex H, from a fast finishing Edie and Noah. Alex and Edie swapped position from their last race together – this could prove to be some exciting competition between the two ladies throughout the season. A special mention of Charlotte, who seems to be getting more comfortable with other riders competing close to her.
In B Grade Georgia O, Jaimie O and Jemma broke away from Melissa and Lucus, who had their own little sub race, to finish in places one to three, with Melissa initially breaking away from Lucas who worked hard to pull her back in only for her to beat him for 4th place. A grade was fast! Hugh put in a very fast last lap to drop his chasers, Tom O and Tom S worked well together to stay with Hugh, Tom S won the sprint for second. Zane and Kristie work well together, and despite both racers being from the triathlon background they both raced an exciting sprint to the line with Kristie just pipping Zane for fourth.
Ryker made it two from two, winning the first handicap race, from Charlotte who rode well from her group, Jessica did very well holding off the pack to maintain 3rd spot just ahead of brother Joshua. Melissa sprinted her way through the race with not a lot of help from fellow started backing herself for the win, Lucas could not hold her wheel but did enough to hold second place from Alex H. It was not a good day for the A grades who were not able to make the inroads expected with such hard riding from the first to third finishes, one extra lap would have made it very interesting.
Rider of the Week was Tom O, he like sister Jaimie did a very strong time trial, held on the leaders in the scratch race and handicap, riding to leave nothing in the tank, which I can confirm when I congratulated him at the end of racing.
Next week we are back at Lansdowne for Round 4.
